Having attended an all-girls school and
a public school, I became very close to different sexual
orientations, including gays and lesbians. I wasn't indifferent to
the fact that they are homosexuals but I didn't mind. In fact, some
of them belong to the group of people closest to me. However, I
noticed that gays tend to be more worried about revealing their
sexuality than lesbians. Asking them why, they believe that the
society tolerates lesbians more than them, and that they are more
discriminated, especially by men. They think that patriarchy is the
reason behind this. Are lesbians really more accepted than gays?
I was surfing the internet when an
article caught my attention. It was entitled China More Accepting of Lesbians Than Gay, written by a guy named JD.
The article was about the reasons why people in China might tolerate
lesbians more than gays. It was written there that the Chinese think
that lesbian relationships are more spiritual. They don't understand
the idea of two girls having an intercourse, when they don't have
male reproductive organs. And so, an “ew” factor is projected by
the idea of two men falling in love. However, I don't clearly see the
point of discriminating gays because of the belief that they are
gross. I find it quite irrational.
People create their own life. Some
would go against the social norms, and we have to accept this fact.
Each of us has our rights to our decisions, no matter how disreputable
some would think it would be. If you have a friend who is homosexual,
but you are against it, you should have told him or her what you know
is right. I think many will agree that you have done enough, not
posting shoutouts, telling the whole world how you despise
homosexuals. Other than that, we should accept them for what they are.
